St George's mushroom

This particular clump of St George’s mushroom were growing on a grassy bank, so I could get pictures showing the underside of the caps in situ without needing to lie down in the wet grass.

Blue and yellow

Yellow archangel was just coming into flower as the bluebells had not quite gone over, towards the end of May. These were in the woods on the Cotwall End LNR.

Fly on a leaf

These pictures were taken on different days, so I’m not sure whether they show the same individual, or even if they are all the same species.

Resin from a cherry tree

Actually resin which is exuded from cherry trees when the bark is damaged.

Resin from a cherry tree

The resin comes out slightly plastic and slightly sticky, then hardens to protect the tree.

Smestow brook at Wightwick Bank

Smestow brook at Wightwick Bank

Windmill Lane is one of the relatively few places it’s possible to get a clear view of the Smestow brook within the city boundaries.

The only clear view of this small waterfall is from above and upstream. I thought it made an interesting almost monochrome abstract composition.

Plantain

Quite common, though less so than the greater plantain. This one was growing by one of the footpaths in the Smestow Valley LNR.

Elder flower

This tiny and delicate flower can be used as an ingredient for a wine, a “champagne”, a cordial or a herbal tea.

Elder flower buds

The rest of the flowers on this bush had already started to open, but for some reason the ones on this twig were still waiting to burst.
